Irving - very well put, and as you say a major challenge. Glad you were able to come to the UK last week and share your thoughts and possible ways forward. Would appreciate getting a copy of the presentation you gave at the BCS Conference in Glasgow.

Thanks

You say "We have a huge gap between young people's perceptions of careers in IT and the realities of those careers in the marketplace."

I have heard this said for just about every technical career that you care to mention. I suspect it is equally true of other professions.

You have to sell the story much more cleverly, and in ways that mean something to a young audience.

As to all those "outward facing" R&D jobs, that may be the problem.

By the way did you come across any references to the Cognitive Systems stuff?

Great stuff Irving, your posts are extremely informative. Having graduated in a rather nontechnical area two years ago, I've been thinking about entering a masters in IT next semester. This post will definitely help out in my decision. Cheers!

* To reinforce your thoughts, I live in one of the developing countries you mentioned towards the end of the post.

There are many revolutionary results of this new technology:

2. I foresee a global advantage of a hundred of times -- in terms of simplicity, productivity, and cost.
3. The Internet (or any LAN) becomes a network of the software entities (the Informational Individual).
4. We can talk about a jump in the approaching in a realistic manner of what -- in DARPA/IPTO or
IST programs -- is known as "cognitive systems".
